The third-generation Cresta, the X80 series, debuted in August 1988 as a full model change from the previous X70 series. While maintaining the core design concept of its predecessor, the exterior evolved with a more curved and stylish form to reflect contemporary trends. From this generation onward, all six-cylinder models were equipped with DOHC 24-valve engines. The suspension system was also upgraded, with struts in the front and a newly adopted double wishbone setup in the rear. Riding the wave of Japan's economic bubble, the Cresta became a huge hit—alongside the Mark II and Chaser, it achieved the highest combined sales in the model’s history.
