Known for their accuracy and attention to detail, Aoshima's precision Waterline Series focuses on naval ship models, depicting the ship's structure from the waterline and above. Models in this series are designed to be seen as if floating on the water, highlighting the above-water structure, whilst also making for a more practical and space-efficient display on a flat surface.

HMS Exeter was a Royal Navy heavy cruiser, the second of two York class ships built during the late twenties. She is most well-known for her role (alongside HMS Ajax, and HMS Achilles) in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate, against the Admiral Graf Spee, a German Panzerschiff (sometimes called a 'Pocket Battleship'). During the battle Exeter was severely damaged, subsequent repairs taking over a year to complete.

Once repaired, Exeter spent most on 1941 escorting covoys, before being transferred to the Far East at the end of the year, following the start of the Pacific War. In February 1942, Exeter was present at the Battle of the Java Sea, being crippled early in the battle and forced to withdraw. While seeking safety, HMS Exeter was intercepted and sunk by the Japanese on 1st March.

This precision Waterline Series model kit represents HMS Exeter as she would have appeared after her 1940-41 repairs and upgrades, following her battle with the Admiral Graf Spee.
